Unit 0: Welcome and the Listening section
The TOEFL iBT Listening section
What you will hear, how the section is built, and how this course helps.
About 20 minLevel B1-B2
This is the free version of the lesson. Learners with a TOEFL iBT® course also get its video parts and their questions.
The Listening section is the second part of the TOEFL iBT, after Reading. It takes about 27 minutes. You hear short recordings and answer questions about them. Everything is in English, and you hear each recording only once.
There are four kinds of task: - Listen and Choose a Response: one person says one line, and you choose the best reply from four written choices. - Listen to a Conversation: two people talk, usually on a campus, then you answer two questions. - Listen to an Announcement: a professor or a campus speaker gives news, a change or an instruction. - Listen to an Academic Talk: a short lecture on a subject such as biology, history or art, with about four questions.
You can take notes on paper during the test. You cannot pause, replay or go back to an earlier question. The questions appear after each recording ends.
Your score is reported on a scale from 1 to 6, which lines up with the CEFR levels (A1 to C2) used in schools and universities around the world.

How to use this course. Unit 1 builds the skills behind every task. Units 2 to 5 take each task in turn. The real-world library gives you podcasts, talks, short videos and a famous speech from the US, the UK, Australia and Canada. Unit 7 gives you a test-day plan and a review routine. Each lesson ends with a short reflection, and some link to real test questions in our practice sets.
Which of the four tasks do you think will be hardest for you, and why?
